RGB to Pantone

Pantone libraries are specialized for different materials and applications. Print libraries work best for paper and cardstock, textile libraries for fabrics, plastic libraries for polymer materials, and solid coated libraries for coated paper stocks. The same base color can appear different on different materials, so choosing the right library is essential for accurate results.

The tool uses LAB color distance calculations to determine the closest matches, which correlates well with human perception of color differences. Confidence scores above 90% indicate excellent matches, 80-90% very good matches, 70-80% good matches, and below 70% may show noticeable differences. For critical applications, always verify with physical swatches, as display calibration and production methods can affect results.

Pantone colors are essential when color consistency is critical across multiple production runs, materials, or locations. This includes brand logos, corporate colors, and any element where precise color matching is required. RGB is suitable for digital displays but can vary between devices and doesn't translate directly to print production.

RGB and Pantone color systems have different gamuts (ranges of reproducible colors). Some bright RGB colors, especially neon tones and certain blues and greens, fall outside the printable Pantone gamut, resulting in poorer matches. In these cases, consider adjusting your RGB color to one with a better Pantone equivalent or work with your printer to find the best possible alternative.
