RGB to HSL

HSL aligns better with how humans perceive and describe colors. It makes it easier to: create variations of the same color by adjusting saturation or lightness, understand color relationships for harmonious palettes, and make intuitive color adjustments. For example, reducing lightness in HSL consistently creates darker shades, whereas equivalent RGB adjustments are less straightforward.

The HSL hue value (0-360°) corresponds directly to positions on a standard color wheel: 0° and 360° are red, 60° is yellow, 120° is green, 180° is cyan, 240° is blue, and 300° is magenta. Intermediate values represent colors between these primary and secondary hues. This circular nature makes it easy to understand color relationships like complementary colors (opposite positions on the wheel).

While both represent brightness, they work differently: HSL lightness moves from black (0%) through the pure hue (50%) to white (100%). HSV value moves from black (0%) to the pure hue (100%) with no white component. This makes HSL better for creating tints (adding white) and HSV better for creating shades (adding black). This converter focuses on HSL, which is more commonly used in web design.

HSL shines when working with color systems, themes, and palettes. Use HSL when you need to: create consistent color variations, adjust color intensity, implement dark/light modes, or generate harmonious color schemes. RGB is better for precise color matching, direct color manipulation, or when working with systems that require RGB input. Modern browsers support HSL natively in CSS, making it easy to implement in web projects.
